If you are looking for fresh ideas to inspire and motivate your youth clients or you’re interested in learning new techniques for training youth, Mike will not disappoint! Relay races with an exercise half way, partner drills, exercise tag, and learning exercise technique — this session is packed with ideas, moves, and fun!

What holds us back and limits us in movement? As our knowledge of the human body in motion expands we realize more and more that no part of the body works in isolation, but rather the entire body works as an integrated whole. With this understanding defining actions as an isolated event such as a hamstring stretch is only telling a part of the story. In this workshop, you will learn about the mobility and stability continuum and how mobility and stability interplay with each other continually to allow effective and efficient movement to occur. Let’s explore alignment from the perspective of the whole body to understand how each body is unique in its expression of movement.

The foot and ankle complex is, for the most part, misunderstood. If not working well, the whole body will feel its effects and will not function properly. The foot and ankle are often forgotten when considering movement. Low back pain and shoulder disfunction can, in many cases, have their roots in the poor function of this complex. This workshop will explore the nature and role of the foot and ankle complex to the function of the body. In this interactive workshop, you will learn how to properly screen foot and ankle function and how to choose the right foot and ankle exercises for your client/athlete.

Common issues covered include osteoarthritis, piriformis syndrome, ligament tears, and bursitis.

Often, fitness and health are seen as synonymous. There is, however, a great distinction. Fitness refers to the quality of being able to perform a physical task, whereas health refers to the physiological harmony of the biological system. Often, these are at conflict. In this session, Michol will look at variability in physical exercise to promote resiliency and versatility of the body from the perspective of health outcomes. In this interactive lecture, Michol will: • identify the difference between fitness and health through the lens of physiology, • outline the current constructs of training for fitness versus training for health and why this should matter to everyone, • clarify a structure which allows the health professional to navigate both fitness and health outcomes, and • provide a guided workout to reinforce these structural elements.

You’ve heard it’s important to double the fun, but what about tripling the results? Progressive resistance training can improve the functional movement patterning for many clients, regardless of ability or starting fitness level. Discover a 3-step approach that is sure to generate improved strength, power and speed for all your clients. Life doesn’t work in 2-count reps, and for that reason it is important to train in a manner that generates speed and strength for critical power and powerful results.

The best exercise is the one our clients like, right? Maybe not. It might be the one where they get the best response. The HERITAGE Family Study (Bouchard et al., 1995) found that people who had identical exercise programs and compliance improved their fitness (V02max) dramatically differently. We, as trainers, can’t determine if clients have the exercise gene, but we can re-think training programs if clients are not getting the results they want. It could be choice of exercise or other variables of training that can help clients meet their goals. Every client has a different “fitness personality” (Brue, 2008), which makes for much variability in exercise response from individual to individual. In this session, we will investigate the physiological and psychological responses to different forms of exercise (i.e., strength, endurance, cardiovascular, HIIT, etc.) and compare and contrast them in an effort to understand how to elicit a better response for our clients. We will identify how to customize each client’s training according to their personality and exercise response. Join Mike as he helps us make sense of the ‘Exercise Gene”.

A lunge is a lunge and a bicep curl is a bicep curl right? Why then are these exercises more impactful in some classes over others? It all comes down to thoughtfully structuring your class and your ability to teach and cue technique effectively. Learn concepts around set performance and how best to sequence exercises most effectively along with how to fine tune your cueing. Take your muscle conditioning classes to the next level and walk away with a toolbox of tricks trainers use to get the most out of their clients.

“Night is to day as movement is to rest” - Philip Beach. This statement is not only extremely important for health and performance outcomes, but speaks directly to what is understood in the research for tissue behaviour. Namely, that HOW we rest can and ultimately will impact how we move. In many instances, the advice for “rest/recovery” is simply to avoid structured exercise. We now know that this could not be further from the truth. HOW we rest can be programmed in and optimized through a programming strategy. One of these strategies is using Restorative Poses. Restorative poses are positions/postures that help regulate the ANS, foster shape change in the body’s structure, and create mindfulness. They are prescribed as very specific health and performance interventions which will accelerate recovery, normalize system function, and balance allostatic load. Anyone who is interested or serious about ‘structured regeneration’ needs to know suitable intervention strategies and why they may be critical to health and performance outcomes.

This practical water workout teaches participants the art of emphasizing correct upper body posture and form while using core muscle strength to balance the body vertically on the noodles. Total body strength is used while kickboxing with spa bells to add challenging trunk moves. Participants will “stick it” in deep water during water polo drills followed by a complete water polo class. You’ll literally be exercising your way around the pool (with or without resistance equipment) to cool rhythmic beats!

Jessica will provide you with the tools to design and deliver creative resistance training combinations to keep your participants moving while allowing their body to engage in active recovery. This means your participants can do more in a shorter period of time and see the results they want to achieve. This session will integrate multijoint and multi-planar exercises within multi-set combos to challenge the body as a whole. Get ready to be “Powered Up” with Jess!

Great music is the driving force behind fun and motivating cycle classes, but it’s not just about playing the song and riding along. It’s about choosing and using great music to create an energizing cycle experience. If it’s a great song for cycle, the drills and transitions will reveal themselves in the music... and not every great song is great for cycle. In this interactive session, we’ll examine different pieces of music and play with mapping the drills. The key is not to pick songs for each drill but to pick the drill based on the song. Speed drills, seated and standing climbs, transitions into and out of the saddle; it’s all in the music. Find mastery with music mapping, and what you get is a super-charged cycle experience!

Why do so many instructors teach step but never venture into the world of teaching multiple step formats? The conversion is easier to make then you think. This workshop will show you how to easily morph your single step choreography into double step choreography for a completely different look and feel. Use the same base of choreography and the same teaching strategies but see how the class morphs into something completely different simply by adding another bench into the mix. It’s a simple conversion for an amazing end result with little to no extra work for the instructor.

The chronic seated position can be extremely disruptive to biology. It has damaging neural, mechanical, metabolic and cellular effects, which lead to poor health and performance outcomes. In this workshop, learn how chronic desk life can: • affect neural input and sensitivity, • alter mechanical structural changes (through posture and through other means), • increase the risk of metabolic disease, and • change cell signalling actions. This science will inform programming of training and coaching solutions which will be presented in a very structured and practical way. For anyone who trains a desk jockey, this workshop is not to be missed. Helen Vanderburg - Fire and Ice Heat it up and cool it down. The perfect balance of high intensity and restoration. Fuel your internal fire and feel the burn of high intensity training with a short intense interval training workout followed by the cooling and calming of yoga inspired stretches. In this final stretch of the conference, learn to apply a variety of dynamic stretching exercises, functional movements, and self-myofascial techniques for the Active Ager. Self-massage can be effective when applying pressure to specific points on the body and can decrease tightness, increase mobility, and improve joint stability. Explore options for aging populations with full body fascial line exercises that are unique and appealing for the older adult. A nice way to finish the weekend with some self-love.

When it comes to success, why is it that some people are able to push forward and achieve at high levels while others seem to flounder? Research suggests that it has less to do with skill or education, and more to do with how we set goals and whether we possess the key characteristics that drive achievement. In this thought-provoking session, Health and Productivity Expert Michelle Cederberg gets honest about what it really takes to find success at the level you desire, and the energy to make it happen. Join Michelle as she helps you perform with more creativity, focus and resilience in your career, and more balance and fulfillment in your life.
